13:59 - Writer's Block: Do You Believe?

When did you stop believing in Santa Claus and why?

View other answers

December 25th, 1987.

I was 7 years old.

My mother was a bit of a rover. She had a new guy that she shacked up with every week, and my father was not in the picture. Because of my mother's desire to be held by someone (anyone?), she would regularly move me during the night and I would wake up in a house/apartment/mobile home other than my own, even though I had fallen asleep at home.

I had wanted a remote controlled car all year. I had asked my mom repeatedly, and written Santa three times. I had also asked him in person while sitting on his knee at the mall.

The morning of December 25th, 1987 I woke up in an unfamiliar place sleeping in a bed with some other kid that looked about my age. I jumped out of bed and ran to where I thought the living room was, not out of excitement, but mainly fear. When I rounded the corner in the hallway it was just a bedroom where my mom was asleep with some guy (I later found out the guy was the sleeping kid's dad). I went and lightly woke my mom up and asked her if Santa brought my gifts here or would they be at our house.

She rolled over, looked at me and said "Santa probably left them at our house". I knew that if there was a Santa, he would have known where I was, and wouldn't have left my gifts at an empty home. So I looked my mom in the eyes and asked, "There is not such thing as Santa is there?" My mom looked at me and said "No Baby, there isn't".

01:01 - In Rainbows Review
15 Step: A neo-soul freak out. Ride the funk Thom ... ride it hard.

Bodysnatchers: Punched me in the face, and made me fucking like it! "I've got no idea what you're taaaaalking abooout!"

Nude: Thom's voice in this song is something to be heard. I am a very 'emotional' music listener, and I could feel the sadness dripping from his lyrics. It is good to have a 'real' version of this song, I think I used to know it as "Big Ideas".

Weird Fishes/Arpeggi: Currently my favorite song on the album. That will change with every 5th listen or so, but for now it is the one. The plucking guitar transposed over the highhat does it for me today. Thom's voice also very strong on this track.

All I Need: For the first 30 seconds I thought I was listening to some alternate universe Q Lazzarus - Goodbye Horses, which isn't a bad thing. This is a slow burner ... let it sink in, the chorus will take you on a trip. Once again, Thom's voice is top notch.

Faust Arp: This is the only song on the album that I hadn't heard of or heard live prior to the release. It instantly reminds me of Blackbird by the Beatles, in the best of ways.

Reckoner: OK ... this isn't the Reckoner I know and love from Bonnaroo and other live recordings. However, with that being said, the openness of this song really grabs me and it builds on itself to create a wonderful song that gets dark and moody midway through and then releases into a light airy orchestral ending. While I enjoy this version of 'reckoner' quite a bit, I do hope they release a version closer to the one performed live.

House of Cards: I really like this song a lot. The distorted feel to the melody and wailing by Thom pull you in, and then he throws out a very uncharacteristic lyric to start it off; "I don't want to be your friend, I just want to be your lover" WHAT? I have never heard a more straighforward unclouded lyric leave Thom's lips, and the effect is staggering to someone who is a longtime fan, I loved it. PS - the rest of the song is good too, however, at 5:28 it is the longest track on the album and never really seems to go anywhere. All the other songs seem so dynamic, this one is almost misplaced.

Jigsaw Falling Into Place: I remember this song as "Open Pick", but it is pretty similar to the live version. I could take or leave this studio version of the track (the live version was much more immediate) ... nothing jumps out at me. However, it will probably end up being one of my favorite songs one day. I tend to do that with Radiohead.

Videotape: Probably my most anticipated song on the album, and I am not disappointed. When I heard this performed live at Bonnaroo last year I fell in love with it, and then tracked down other live versions online in past 18 or so months. I like the syncopated drums, it fleshes out the sound some for me. The starkness of just the piano and voice was nice, but this is a new iteration, and it works well for me.

--------------
Well, that was my first day with Radiohead's latest! I listened to it about 8 times between reading for class, going to class, and working on a project that is due tomorrow and I must say it has been a beautiful day musically.

Current Radiohead album ranking for me:

1. The Bends (I love this album for many reasons, OK Computer never knocked it from the top spot)
2. OK Computer (a VERY close Second)
3. In Rainbows (it is just so damn accessible)
4. Kid A (I can argue Kid A is better than In Rainbows in many respects, but the newness of In Rainbows moves it above for now)
5. Amnesiac (Not a weak album by any means, but it is hard to put it higher with those others)
6. Hail to the Thief (I like the album, but once again, it isn't better than the rest)
7. Pablo Honey (the battering ram, the one that opened the door. Raw, young, immature, and just enough to pull them up from the Drill EP)

I will now go read what some others have said about it, and see what other fans are thinking!

Good night and give it a listen!!!!

00:58 - Some exciting news ...
My Gators lost a heartbreaker tonight! Thankfully that won't ruin my good mood!

I competed in a negotiation competition today at school. This was my first non class based legal exercise and it went absolutely perfect. My teammate and I didn't make any missteps and completely destroyed the team we went up against. At the end of the day my team was chosen with one other team out of 22 to represent FIU College of Law at the Regional Competition at Emory University in Atlanta!

WOOOO HOOO!

14:24 - Time marches on ...
After quite a hiatus, and being generally non-committal to blogging, I am back!

The next step in my academic career starts in 3 days. I hear 2L will be a lot like 1L; just with less anxiety and more work. Sound thrilling.

For those that don't know ... I spent a little over a month and a half abroad this summer in Spain and the UK. While in Spain I was studying European Law and Comparative Constitutional Law at the University of Sevilla. Spain itself was absolutely amazing, although it did start to lose some of its initial charm the longer I stayed. Immediately after classes ended in Spain, Nichole and I headed to the UK to visit with my old buddy Chris and his wife Amy. Good times were had, and I got to see how Chris' new life is treating him.

After returning to the States from Europe, Nichole and I moved from our old one bedroom apartment to a two bedroom townhouse a few blocks away. The extra room is nice and I think we will be happy here for the remainder of our time in Miami. Speaking of Nichole ... she got a job teaching 5th grade in downtown Miami (mainly inner city, low SES students).

This semester I will be taking the following classes:

Wills and Trusts (I am excited about this class, because it is a large part of what I want to do as a lawyer)
Evidence (taking it for the advantages of having it under my belt come BAR time)
Professional Responsibility (required course to participate in Clinics as well as BAR tested)
LSV III (blah blah blah - required)

I plan on taking federal taxation and other estate planning related courses next semester.

The transition from 1L to 2L has been bloodier than I expected. Two of the people I regularly hung out with as a 1L failed out and a third friend of mine decided to bow out under his own volition ... and those were just the people that I associated with regularly. I think all told, the number of people who failed, dropped, or transfered from the beginning of 1L is somewhere just over 20. What a slaughter.

Well, I am going to wrap this up for now.
